Transitioning from Gumroad

How to transition your Subscription from Gumroad

First things first, as this is probably the main reason you’re here! 🙂

There’s no way for me to migrate user accounts or payment information from Gumroad to the new website from my end, or anywhere really. So it needs to be done manually by each customer.

In short – you will have to cancel your current subscription on Gumroad, and resubscribe using BroTools website.

Here are the steps in a bit more detail:

  1. Cancel your BroTools subscription on Gumroad. It will not disable your license immediately; it will remain active until its expiration date.
  2. After your current license expires, go to brotools.tech and purchase a new subscription.
  3. In Maya, you will need to go to BroTools – License Manager, enter your email, and then on the second page choose the new license to “Install.”

After that, your new subscription will be handled directly by the BroTools website and the payment method you choose (e.g., PayPal), not by Gumroad.

When

Currently there is no rush. I’m still ironing out all the kinks with the new website. Existing Gumroad subscriptions will remain to be billed, and existing licenses will remain active for at least a few months.

There’s a possibility that Gumroad will cancel active PayPal subscriptions. In this case you can contact me and I will extend your license to give more time to smoothly transition to the new website.

Why

Gumroad is deprecating PayPal support, both as a payment and payout option. While their Direct Transfers system and Stripe integration work well, they only support around 50 countries – far fewer than PayPal’s 200+ country coverage. If you’re outside the US or Europe, you’ll likely lose the ability to purchase anything on Gumroad going forward.

Which is a problem.

How licensing system works

To clear up some possible confusion – BroTools licensing system core doesn’t actually depend on Gumroad. Here’s a diagram that explains how it works:

The licensing server has always operated independently from Gumroad. Gumroad simply handles payments and notifies the BroTools server about new purchases. BroTools server then processes this information to generate new licenses or update existing ones.

BroTools plugin itself only communicates with BroTools licensing server.

This means there’s no immediate urgency in making the switch, and we can transition away from Gumroad without disrupting the licensing service. Instead of relying on a marketplace, I’ve decided to deploy my own store, giving me much more flexibility, and new system makes it possible to add support for many other payment platforms.

BroTools might lose some discoverability that was provided by Gumroad’s Discover, but I feel like BroTools is ready to take these “training wheels” off and handle everything on it’s own.
